Total Economic Impact of Mac in Enterprise

Many employees already use Mac computers in their personal life and want to use them at work too. They like that Mac is intuitive and easy to use. So it makes sense that employees should have the choice to use Apple devices for work.

But many businesses customers may not realize the significant financial benefits of using Mac at work.

In 2019, Apple commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a study of seven companies to determine The Total Economic Impact of Mac In Enterprise. A few years later, in 2021, Forrester updated the study to include the impact that Apple M1 chips have on enterprise Mac deployments. This update was made having interviewed decision-makers from ten organizations with experience deploying both M1-based and non-M1-based Mac computers.

Forrester then constructed a composite company—referred to here as Composite, Inc.—representing the actual companies interviewed.

Forrester used the composite company to present aggregate financial analysis in the following areas:

Reduced IT support and operational costs
Reduced and avoided hardware and software costs
Reduced risk of data breach
Improved employee productivity and engagement

The following benefits reflect the three-year financial analysis associated with the composite organization:

During the three-year device life cycle, organizations saved $635 per Mac when comparing the cost of support and operation of PCs.
During the three-year device life cycle, Mac costs $207.75 less than comparable PCs when comparing hardware and software costs.
The risk of a data breach was reduced by 50 percent per deployed Mac.
With Mac with M1 computers, the composite organization improves its retention rate by 20 percent; reduces startup times by 80 percent, leading to 48 hours of increased productivity over three years; and increases the productivity of all employees by 5 percent, leading to an additional 104 hours of additional productivity for Mac users annually.

In addition, the following unquantified benefits were also identified:

Compatibility with iOS and iPadOS applications
Reduced carbon footprint compared to previous Mac and PC options
Improved time-to-value for mergers and acquisitions of organizations with Mac deployments
